Our weight affects many things and can negatively affect our health. However, few people may realize how important the lymph is in this regard. This whitish body fluid that circulates in the lymphatic system acts as a cleansing and defense system. Obesity causes inflammation in the fatty tissue around the lymphatic vessels. This slows down the flow of lymph and puts the body in serious danger.
The accumulation of fluid in the interstitial space means impaired waste removal. This can then make it difficult for a person to move for example in the long term. Symptoms are usually, for example, swollen limbs, but often these are very subtle situations that are only noticed later.
In obese individuals, the body retains excessive amounts of cellular and extracellular fluids. People with a BMI over 40 are at high risk, and up to 90% of people with a BMI over 60 are certain to develop problems. Therefore, especially people with higher weight are recommended to practice specific exercises also for the regeneration of the lymphatic system.
With weight loss, the lymph returns to normal. But often very slowly. Even if you do manage to lose some weight, it is therefore a good idea to continue to exercise – not to lose more weight, but to get your body back in shape and get the lymph moving again.
In addition to traditional exercise, there are other methods to try to get the lymph flowing. One of the most commonly used is manual lymphatic drainage. This is a technique of gentle pressure and rhythmic movements, essentially a massage, which should get the lymph flowing. For minor complications, its effectiveness is proven, but if the problems are severe, the method usually has only limited functioning.

But wearing compression aids also helps. However, these should be used in conjunction with exercise. Many people think that they alone will help to get the lymph moving again, but the truth is that without regular exercise this hope is probably completely futile.
That being said, even a huge weight loss doesn’t necessarily mean that it will put your lymph back in order. Especially if it has been damaged for an extended period of time, even after losing weight you need to continue to exercise, attend medical check-ups, and in some cases even take special medications.
Spend enough time exercising, change your diet, try not to live under stress and try lymphatic massage. If you combine these rules, you should be able to cope with the problem, but it is still a good idea to consult a specialist and keep an eye on the state of your lymph.
