Almost all of us have them at home, but many of us don’t realise what a special food they are. We all eat potatoes, it is one of the most common side dishes. Some people try to leave them out of their diet, fearing the high calorie or sugar intake. But in reality, potatoes are very healthy, full of vitamins and minerals, and it’s a good idea to include them regularly in your diet.

Many diets present potatoes as a food that is not suitable for weight loss or a healthy lifestyle. This food is not the enemy of our quest for a perfect figure. Research in recent years has shown that the opposite is true.

Rich in vitamins and minerals

Potatoes are a vegetable that can contribute greatly to your body in many ways. Thanks to their high vitamin C content, they strengthen the immune system and promote collagen production. They contain potassium, which regulates blood pressure and supports muscle and nerve function, as well as magnesium and iron, which are important for blood formation and the nervous system.

In addition, studies have also confirmed in the past that potatoes significantly promote satiety. In this respect, boiled potatoes have scored the highest ever among all side dishes in tests. Some people may only eat meat and vegetables for lunch thinking that skipping potatoes will help them lose weight, but this is not the case.

If you have a portion of boiled potatoes, you will eat far fewer calories during the day. And that’s exactly what people need when dieting. Not to starve, but to feel healthily full and lose weight because of it.

Low in calories and fat

Although some may find potatoes to be an unnecessary extra food in their diet, they are actually very low in calories. A boiled or baked potato without fat only has around 77 calories per 100 grams. If you also cook them with the skin on, they retain maximum fibre and vitamins.

It is often claimed that potatoes are unhealthy because of their high sugar content. In fact, they have a medium to low glycaemic index. They also support the health of the gut microflora and help regulate blood sugar levels thanks to their resistant starch content. If you leave potatoes out of your diet for a long time, your body will miss out on healthy sugars.

Of course, you need to think about how you process potatoes. French fries are also a potato product, but they tend to be salty, fatty, very heavy and calorie-dense. Include potatoes in your diet boiled (ideally in the skin), dry roasted in the oven or make a vegetable potato salad without mayonnaise.
