In today’s hectic world full of stress, work pressure and information, it’s easy to lose your temper. Often one forgets how easy and effective it is to calm the mind and body. We all have nerves. And we all struggle with a bad mood sometimes. But everyone handles the situation differently. Many reach for their cell phone, meditation or tea, but few realize that sometimes a simple touch can be enough. Even a gentle tug on the earlobe, for example.
This small, physically undemanding act can serve as a quick reset for the nervous system. And it’s available anytime, anywhere. In light of new research and growing interest in so-called auricular techniques, it turns out that this is not just a popular TikTok trick, but a practical method with real potential for managing stress and anxiety.
How does the earlobe relate to the nervous system?
Although the earlobe is a seemingly insignificant part of our body, it is actually richly supplied with nerve endings. According to experts, touching or gently pulling the lobe activates sensory pathways that send signals to the brain via the so-called auricular branch of the nervus vagus (vagus nerve) and help activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the part of the nervous system that calms us down and brings us back to balance.
Thus, gently pulling or massaging the lobe can lead to a slower heart rate, reduce levels of stress hormones such as cortisol, and promote a sense of calm and stability. And this can happen in a few tens of seconds.
Auriculotherapy and anxiety
There are scientific papers dealing with so-called auriculotherapy, i.e. stimulation of the ear. It is a way to relieve stress, anxiety or psychological tension. For example, a meta-analysis involving 12 studies showed that auriculotherapy leads to a significant reduction in subjectively perceived stress, better heart rate variability and improvements in other physiological indicators.
In one study, only patients with anxiety were interviewed. They confirmed an 86.7% decrease in anxiety scores to normal values after 10 sessions of auriculotherapy. At the same time, 61.7% of those participating in the research rated their quality of life as very good. These findings show that ear stimulation is not necessarily a mere placebo trick, but can have measurable effects on a person’s nervous and psychological state.
━━ Sometimes in stressful situations, it can help to literally pull oneself up by the ears. Scientists explain how and why this works.

If you want to try this trick yourself, it’s very simple and easy. As soon as you are troubled by stress, anxiety or other psychological problems, you can simply reduce the negative feelings in this way. The therapists’ recommendation is:
- Grasp the base of your earlobe with your thumb and forefinger and gently pull it downward, or massage it for about 60 seconds.
- Be careful that the action is not painful. The pressure should be gentle, rather just soothing and caring.
- You can massage both sides of the ear or just one side, it’s up to you. Often a few seconds is enough to feel relaxation, slowing of the breath, slight relief.
And why can such a simple thing actually work? According to psychologists, a touch on the earlobe reminds the body that it is safe. And that’s often what’ s missing when our psyche collapses. A simple signal of calm, that we don’t need to react by fighting or fleeing, can make a big difference.
