Travel connects people around the world and allows them to experience other cultures and traditions. It also shapes economies and businesses. Many countries can no longer imagine life without the influx of tourists. World Tourism Day was created to promote the importance of travel.

What is World Tourism Day?

World Tourism Day is celebrated every year on 27 September. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of preserving travel around the world. It was established in 1979 by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). It is a specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes local economies and introduces sustainable tourism. If you have noticed during your travels that European villages and towns are beautifully maintained, this is the work of this organization. This day is a reminder that travel is not just a leisure activity, but also speaks of preserving culture, connecting people and global cooperation.

Why is it celebrated?

The recognition of World Tourism Day highlights the effort to show how tourism impacts cultural, social and economic growth. However, travel is associated with messiness and other downsides, so celebrating this day also highlights the importance of sustainable travel. It also promotes peace by encouraging people to tolerate and learn about other cultures. Importantly, travel should be accessible to all, regardless of age, physical disposition and social status.

Why is tourism important?

Tourism has gradually become a powerful global industry. Many countries depend on tourists as an important basis for their economic income. Travel is thus about more than just exploring and filling the treasury. Its importance lies in learning and sharing. Tourism is also an employment booster, according to statistics, providing around 357 million jobs worldwide in 2024 .

According to the latest WTTC survey, tourism contributed 10% of global GDP, amounting to about US$10.9 trillion. Domestic tourists then spent US$5.3 trillion, while foreign visitors accounted for US$1.9 trillion. The data covers 184 countries and 28 geographic regions.

Summary

World Tourism Day is not just a celebration of a popular activity, but a reminder of how it contributes to shaping our world. Connecting people, cultural exchange and protecting the planet are essential aspects that should be highlighted. So let’s celebrate 27 September by spreading awareness of its importance.
