The functioning of humanity is changing as a result of the development of science and technology, which are the driving forces of modern society. The contribution of these fields is celebrated each year during World Space Week, which takes place from 4 to 10 October. It reminds people that science and technology have led to improved living conditions.

How did World Space Week come about?

World Space Week was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999. At the same time, it declared that it would be held from 4 to 10 October each year to commemorate important events: on 4 October 1957, the first Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched, leading to the development of space exploration; and on 10 October 1967, a treaty came into force that addressed the role of states in the exploration and peaceful use of outer space.

Where and how is it celebrated?

Various events are taking place throughout the week to educate and spread awareness about space. They are coordinated by the United Nations with the support of the World Space Week Association. They are usually organised by space and aerospace companies, schools, planetariums, museums and many organisations. Interest grows year after year. One record was set in 2023, when more than 16,000 events were held in 83 countries. This year over 90 countries are expected to participate and the programme includes over 15,000 events.

What are the goals of World Space Week?

World Space Week has several objectives. The most important is to highlight the need for space education. Linked to this is the need to educate people around the world about the benefits that space has to offer. For this reason, space programmes should be promoted. Similarly, it is essential to stimulate young people’s interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The exploration of space is in the spirit of international cooperation.

Life in space

The theme chosen for this year’s 2025 edition is ‘Life in Space’. With increasing efforts to bring life to other planets, this theme is more than timely. It highlights the possibilities of how space could become a home for humans. It also highlights the advanced technologies that support this goal.
