Sandwiches are a food that takes many forms and is very adaptable. Whatever combinations you can think of, they can be created. It has spread across all continents and has become an essential snack that can fill you up at any time of the day. It’s simple, quick to prepare and most importantly, it’s created to suit everyone’s tastes. World Sandwich Day, which is celebrated on 3 November, was created in its honour.
Where did the sandwich come from?
The history of the sandwich is longer than many may think. Its origin is attributed to John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. Speculation abounds as to what the meaning of the word Sandwich is, which is the name of a market town located in the county of Kent, England. Its name has quite a rich evolution. Originally the word was spelled “Sondwic”, then “Sandwic”, and finally in 1086 it took on the more current form “Sandwice” before arriving at its current name of Sandwich. And what does it actually mean? Its name has its origins in Old English, where “Sandwic” meant “sandy harbour” or “sandy settlement”, referring to its location by the sea.
The first sandwich was probably created in 1762, although rather accidentally, as is often the case with famous inventions. Earl John Montagu was a card lover and during one game he wanted to refresh himself without dirtying his cards. He was therefore brought a snack of meat sandwiched between two loaves of bread. The people in his circle immediately seized on this and wanted ” the same as a Sandwich”, which eventually gave rise to the name sandwich. It is reported that the official name sandwich was first used by Edward Gibbon.
However, historians speculate that the origins of the word and the dish itself may be somewhat different. The principle of the sandwich may have originated much earlier, reportedly 2000 years ago during the Jewish celebration of Passover.
