Kindness should be a normal part of our lives. Even a small act of kindness and compassion can have a huge impact on another person. Whether it’s words of encouragement, a smile, or helping a stranger. That’s why every year on 13 November, we mark World Kindness Day, which connects people across the world through its expression.

The history of World Kindness Day

To emphasize the need to show more empathy and compassion , successful efforts were made to establish World Kindness Day in 1998. It was initiated by the World Kindness Movement, an international organization that brings together groups of people from different countries fighting to spread acts of kindness. The first impulse was introduced a year earlier in Tokyo, which became the meeting place for representatives of several countries. There they signed a declaration pledging to spread awareness of kindness and empathy in the modern world. Gradually, the day spread to many countries and today kindness is emphasised during celebrations in schools, companies, organisations, etc.

This day aims to change the perception of kindness, as people should see it as a strength, not a weakness. In today’s world, this effort is all the more important as everyone focuses on their own success and comfort at the expense of other people. Kindness is gradually disappearing and being replaced by distance and falsity. Yet one simple act of kindness can make another’s day and change their mind. Kindness has not died out in people, but it is hidden deep inside. If you show concern without ulterior motives, naturally and sincerely, and speak a kind word, you show that you care about other people too.

Why kindness is important

A gesture of kindness is not a whim or a phrase uttered unnecessarily. Another person can cherish it in themselves for a long time as a beautiful memory that warms in difficult times. Studies even confirm that kindness has a positive effect on your mental and physical health. When you help others, the feeling of satisfaction is boosted by the production of happiness hormones such as dopamine and oxytocin. This makes you less stressed and extends your life expectancy. It’s similar when you witness acts of kindness yourself. You’ll feel more motivated to take a similar step, which in turn can inspire someone else.

How to celebrate World Kindness Day

Kindness can be shown in many ways, it’s up to you to decide which is the most enjoyable and closest to your heart. Countries around the world have different celebrations, but similar forms are emerging, such as writing letters, giving flowers or encouraging other people to do a good deed. There is no limit to creativity as kindness can be expressed in many ways. Kindness is also taught to children at school, as being kind to other children lays the foundation for the kind of children they will be as adults.
