Maintaining your heart health should be a priority for everyone. The heart is the source of life, our engine, without which human existence would not be possible. However, many people neglect health and prevention. World Heart Day, celebrated annually on 29 September, raises awareness of the importance of heart care.

Heart health

Cardiovascular problems are one of the most common causes of death. According to statistics, approximately 20 million people die from heart disease each year , equivalent to one in five deaths worldwide, as reported by the World Heart Federation. It claims more lives than cancer and chronic respiratory diseases combined.

The heart beats continuously and is responsible for the overall functioning of the body. It makes at least 100,000 beats in a single day. But its natural function is affected by unhealthy lifestyles. Yet up to 80% of cases of heart disease and stroke are preventable.

World Heart Day

To promote heart health, World Heart Day was created and is celebrated annually on 29 September. Today, it is a global event to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease, highlight risk factors, and recommend prevention and treatment options. The World Heart Federation, in collaboration with the World Health Organization , proclaimed the day in 2000. This year marks the 25th anniversary.

Risk factors

Several factors threaten heart health, including obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking. However, people’s current lifestyles are exacerbating these problems. Genetics and exposure to stressful situations also play a role. The risk of disease increases with age.

How is the day celebrated?

World Heart Day is celebrated in more than 100 countries. The main aim is to attract the interest of as many people as possible who should be aware of the importance of heart care. Various campaigns and lectures in schools, preventive blood pressure and cholesterol measurements and public runs are organised. The World Heart Federation emphasises the potential of prevention and awareness-raising to save millions of lives. It calls on governments to develop plans that include expanding heart care and screening for cardiovascular disease. It could help 500 million people get the treatment they need by 2030.

Summary

World Heart Day is a reminder that it is essential to care for heart health at all times. By taking this approach, you can help ensure a longer and better quality of life. Thus, this holiday tries to convey the message that everyone can do something for their heart health. All it takes is a small change: limiting smoking and alcohol, eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep or getting enough exercise.
