Many could not imagine their diet without pastries. One of the most popular and most used types is bread, which takes many forms around the world. Every country has a different idea of what bread should look and taste like. And it is the baking of bread that unites people from all over the world on 16 October, when World Bread Day is celebrated.
History of World Bread Day
It is a special occasion that is dedicated to bread, one of the oldest staple foods of the human diet. World Bread Day was established in 2006 on the initiative of the International Union of Bakers and Confectioners (UIBC) and the German Central Bakers’ Association. The day seeks to open up debates on the perceived importance of bread in everyday life and highlights the problems of hunger in some parts of the planet. It also pays tribute to the skills of bakers. It is specifically celebrated on 16 October as this date marks the anniversary of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), which was set up in 1945 to combat hunger.
The importance of bread
The first bread was made about 12 000 years ago from crushed grain mixed with water. To this day, it is still seen as a source of energy and nutrients required by the body. Bread has continuously evolved in different forms, flavours and preparation methods. These aspects reflect cultural diversity across the world. Indeed, it is of fundamental importance. For millennia it has been a symbol of livelihood or of social and religious events.

This day highlights the need to spread awareness about hunger and malnutrition, which are major global issues. While bread is widely available in some parts of the world, it is a scarce commodity in poorer and underdeveloped areas. Millions of people lack the necessary nutrients. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, which promotes sustainable agriculture and fights for the availability of nutritious food, is trying to find solutions to this problem.
How to celebrate World Bread Day
There are several options for anyone who wants to get involved in celebrating World Bread Day. The easiest step is to bake your own loaf of bread. Don’t be afraid to experiment, as you know, there are no limits to imagination. If you don’t believe in your culinary skills, visit your nearest bakery and support it by buying some bread. If you want to go the humanitarian route, make a donation to organisations that fight hunger.
