Animals play an important role in nature. Fauna is an essential part of the planet. According to the laws of nature, everything is connected. However, some species are gradually disappearing, leading to low biodiversity and disruption of natural processes. World Animal Day was created to protect animals and to highlight their importance.

World Animal Day over the years

The status of animals is a concern for many people. Heinrich Zimmermann came up with the idea of establishing a day dedicated to them. He was a writer and publisher of a German magazine focusing on people and dogs. Aware of the plight and treatment of animals, he organised the first World Animal Day on 24 March 1925. Over 5,000 people took part and over the past century the event has become an internationally recognised holiday. Today, it attracts animal advocates from more than 70 countries.

Why October 4?

Although the first edition took place in March, the official date was later set for October 4. The choice of date was purposeful, as this is the day that Francis of Assisi, who was the founder of the Franciscan Order and revered nature, is celebrated. He was particularly fond of animals, and according to legend, he even knew how to talk to them and managed to tame a wolf. Indeed, many paintings depict him with animals. In 1931, the International Congress for the Protection of Animals in Florence officially adopted World Animal Day.

A day for animal lovers

World Animal Day was created to promote the status of animals and improve their safety and protection across the world. During this day, all animal lovers and animal protectionists can unite to fight against cruelty, neglect and wrongful killing. It also supports efforts to end the suffering of animals, whether they are wild, farm or domestic. They are living, thinking beings who have feelings like humans. Thanks to the power of World Animal Day, we can give them a voice because they cannot speak for themselves.

How to celebrate World Animal Day

This day is in the spirit of protecting and promoting animal rights. Various awareness-raising and educational events are organised, and shelters open their doors for visits and adoptions of abandoned pets. At the same time, various concerts, product sales, runs or walks are organised, the profits of which are donated to shelters, rescue stations and other organisations. It is important to spread this awareness among young people, which is why various events are organised in schools. Media dissemination of information about the importance of World Animal Day is an integral part of this.
