Rice is an ingredient widely used in Asian cuisine, but it is also very popular in Europe. I personally love it and I know that many of my friends prefer it to pasta or potatoes. But few people realise that this food can be replaced quite easily. Did you know that barley can be used in a very similar way in the kitchen? Since I have cholesterol problems and have been looking for ways to change the situation, I am very happy for this option.
High cholesterol is not something that only bothers me. Nowadays, it is not that difficult to have problems with it because it is mainly caused by eating ultra-processed foods. Even children and teenagers have been struggling with complications in recent years. Yet incorporating foods that help with cholesterol into the diet is not that difficult. Barley is one of them.
A significant change in taste
Some people claim that barley and rice are essentially the same side dish. So I would say that’s not true, barley definitely tastes different in my opinion. In some cases, I still lean towards rice, but on the other hand, I prefer barley in many dishes.
Its flavour is a little more pronounced, slightly nutty to sweeter. The texture is chewier, more fibrous. I wouldn’t recommend it for risotto, but on the other hand it is ideal for soup. Barley is very filling thanks to its high fibre content, so it is better than rice in thick soups.

Fibre not only makes you feel full, but also improves digestion. In addition, it lowers cholesterol and helps stabilize blood sugar. It is for this reason that it is so advisable to consume barley instead of rice at least occasionally, ideally replacing the side dish entirely in case of major health problems.
Barley has more protein than rice, which promotes muscle and overall satiety. If you eat it regularly, you’re also less likely to experience sweet cravings as often. Prevention against type 2 diabetes is also guaranteed by this food because it doesn’t cause blood sugar spikes.
I personally got used to barley quite quickly. I still do not leave rice out of my diet, but in many cases I find this food more suitable and even tasty. If someone tells you that barley and rice taste the same, it’s not true. However, they can definitely be substituted for each other. And if you want to do something for your health, learn to consume barley regularly.
