Most of my peers use their thumbs when typing on their phones. And you’d probably think that’s perfectly normal. How else are you supposed to text? Well, I have personally encountered many surprised expressions from acquaintances who have noticed that I use my index finger. Yes, in their words, I hold the phone “like bread and butter”, but it’s simply easier to work with it that way. It wasn’t until recently, however, that I realized that this might say something about me.
One of my friends only noticed the way I use my mobile phone a few days ago. He told me I was weird. But I already knew what to say: “That’s possible, but according to scientists, I’m also a creative and balanced person with peace of mind.” He looked at me a little surprised, so I had to explain to him that psychologists can read a lot from the way a person holds his phone.
Two thumbs ideal
According to statistics, most people use both thumbs when typing on a mobile phone. In surveys, a total of 74% of people said they hold their phone in their right hand, but use both hands for typing. With this style of typing, people are then able to type up to 36 words per minute. So I probably type slower, but that’s okay. I don’t think I can even come up with 36 words a minute.
It’s usually the younger generation that uses two-thumb typing. Then some people write with one thumb if they have the other hand occupied, for example if they are holding it on the tram and even during the journey to or from work they have to write back to someone quickly. Older people often use their index finger when they have a mobile phone on their desk, for example.

According to psychologists, the way you hold your mobile phone can be divided into four categories. Each of them says something about you:
- If you’re one of those people who can hold the phone with onehand and write on it with the same hand, you seem to be a person with a carefree attitude, who is happy and confident, who is not afraid of challenges, but who goes about some things a little bit headfirst. You can make mistakes that are easy to overlook and regret later.
- Phone in your hands, typing with one thumb: One hand protectively holding the phone, the other concentrating on typing. It says something about you that you are considerate and pragmatic, but also intuitive. You don’t want to give anyone a chance to know your mistakes. You can show empathy, but only when the people around you deserve it.
- Phone in your hands, typing with both thumbs: This description should fit most of my friends. These are people who have excellent powers of observation and complete tasks quickly. They don’t dwell on unnecessary things, they focus on easy solutions. If you belong to this group, you are cheerful people who easily infect others with good mood.
- Phone in one hand, writing with the other index finger: If like me you belong to this category, you are a creative and lively person with an extroverted mood. You refuse to conform to norms, but have a calm and composed soul. Often you need to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life by doing something original.
Did you find yourself in the description of the characteristics? I agree that I may be a creative extrovert, on the other hand, I don’t think most of my friends tend to complete tasks quickly and without undue delay. Anyway, if someone ever blasts you for holding your cell phone strangely, you can at least tell them what the experts think it means.
