Throughout the year it is possible to observe various fascinating cosmic phenomena in the sky. One of these is the meteor shower, the most famous of which is the Orionids meteor shower, which is visible in any part of the world. What exactly is it and when is the best time of year to observe it?

What is the Orionids meteor shower?

During the autumn days, the sky is lit up by “shooting stars”, otherwise known as Orionids. These are formed when particles from Halley’s Comet enter the Earth’s atmosphere at about 66 kilometres per second. These are meteors that are parts of Halley’s Comet and look like burning lines. This comet is unique because it passes the Earth once every 76 years or so. As it travels past the Sun, it leaves behind small fragments which then enter the atmosphere.

They vaporise as they rub against the air, forming luminous meteors. The sight of this meteor shower is truly breathtaking and, unlike a comet, it can be seen every year. This year, the Orionids meteor shower is active from October 2 to November 7 and peaks around midnight to dawn today , October 22.

How to track the Orionids meteor shower?

Cosmic phenomena are fascinating, mysterious and enchanting, which is why they attract many enthusiasts, astronomers and casual observers. However, it is an activity that requires waiting. Meteor showers can be observed with the naked eye, so there is no need to acquire a telescope or binoculars. Once your eyes get used to the darkness, observing will be perfectly easy and enjoyable. When the Orionid meteor shower is at its peak, the Moon is at new moon, the sky is dark, and the viewing is therefore pleasant.

Where is the best place to watch the meteor shower?

However, viewing a meteor shower requires the right conditions. First of all, it is important to find a place where no street lamps or other sources of artificial light reach. It is best to find an open area where there are no buildings or other distractions. This will give you an open view of the entire night sky. Meteors can be seen in all parts of the sky. If you look carefully and have at least a little knowledge of how to navigate the night sky, you will find that meteors travel from the constellation Orion. That’s where the name of the meteor shower comes from.
