While some parts of the world are caught in winter weather, others are basking under the summer sun. One example is Brazil, where summer began in December and lasts until March. The season is thus marked by swimming, relaxation, but also dancing, music and energy. What are the ways to spend in Brazil?
The beach is a second home
High temperatures and an oceanfront location define the entire summer. Brazilians spend it mainly on the beaches, the most famous being Copacabana and Ipanema, where they indulge in many activities. They often stay here all day. As well as swimming, they enjoy spending time with family and friends, sipping chilled drinks and coconut water and preparing food on portable grills. The Brazilian summer is simply relaxing and full of social gatherings.
Summer sports: from surfing to beach volleyball
The beaches and warm weather open up opportunities for summer sports. Brazilians are very fond of surfing, beach volleyball, footvolley (a combination of football and beach volleyball, a Brazilian speciality), as well as running along the promenades, beach yoga, capoeira and many others. The relationship with sport is very intense here, as they devote a lot of time to it. In the morning before work, during the afternoon and in the evening.
New Year’s Eve in white on the beach
The Brazilian summer falls on Christmas and New Year’s Eve, so the celebrations have a completely different atmosphere and energy. New Year’s Eve in particular is famous for being one of the biggest holidays associated with celebrations on the beaches. The locals traditionally dress in white. The colour white is a symbol of new beginnings. It is also customary to bring gifts to the goddess of the sea, Yemanja, in the form of flowers and small objects, which are then thrown into the waves. Midnight swimming with fireworks overhead is an unforgettable experience.

If there’s one event Brazilians look forward to all year round, it’s the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, which takes place every February or March. It is a world-famous event full of dancing and music that attracts locals and tourists from all corners of the planet. The atmosphere is totally immersive, energetic and unrepeatable. Brazilians have been preparing for this moment for most of the year to make the most of it. Carnival is the highlight of the summer and this year it starts on 13 February and lasts until 21 February.
Trips to the countryside
After shedding their flip-flops and shaking the sand out of their clothes for a while, they head out to explore nature. Their steps lead them to the Amazon, where they take boat trips or hikes. They also love national parks, waterfalls or lakes. They usually rent huts and go exploring.
Music in the open air
Energy, passion, love of movement, especially dance, and music. All this describes Brazilians. Above all, music accompanies them throughout the summer, because it sounds in every corner. Concerts, impromptu dance classes, spontaneous twilight dance parties in parks and beaches are commonplace on the streets. And of course, there are also festival visits. In short, music is an integral part of them.
Summer in Brazilian style
The Brazilians know how to enjoy summer to the full. Whether with friends, family or alone, they make the most of every free moment. Summer is literally in their blood and they are not afraid to show it.
