Morning rituals are something we all have somehow strongly ingrained in us. And for most people, waking up means smelling fresh coffee. But although it’s good for the soul, coffee isn’t so great for the body right after waking up. Scientists point out that immediately upon waking, levels of the stress hormone cortisol naturally rise, which is supposed to wake the body up and kick-start metabolism. It’s not a good idea to interfere with this process with caffeine. Instead, have a glass of Celtic salt.

Most people think coffee will kick-start them in the morning. But the opposite is true. If you have a cup with this black drink too early, you can hurt your body. So it is advisable to save it for later and start with something healthier instead. Celtic salt dissolved in a glass of water is ideal.

Why is coffee in the morning inappropriate?

Although coffee helps concentration, after waking up the body needs a completely different kind of support than stimulation of the central nervous system. Caffeine delays the feeling of tiredness but does not address the cause. It is also diuretic, which means that it promotes the elimination of water from the body. It’s just that after a night out, the body is easily dehydrated, so depriving it of water is not ideal.

A 2021 study confirms that even mild dehydration reduces cognitive performance, mood and ability to concentrate. So, paradoxically, if the first liquid of the day is coffee, it can make you feel more tired. Therefore, the ideal first step is to replenish water and electrolytes, not to increase stress hormones and diuresis.

Celtic salt in the morning

A simple combination of water and a pinch of Celtic sea salt helps restore the balance of electrolytes that the body loses during sleep through breathing and sweating. Unlike regular refined salt, Celtic salt also contains small amounts of magnesium, calcium and potassium.

These minerals promote hydration and proper nervous system function. Research indicates that even a slight sodium deficiency can lead to a drop in blood pressure, weakness and fatigue, while a small amount of the mineral in the morning helps improve water absorption into the cells.

It really doesn’t take much. Dissolve about 1/8 teaspoon of Celtic salt in a small glass (250-300 ml) of lukewarm water. This simple drink promotes hydration, improves digestion and wakes up the body more gently than coffee. Doctors even warn that many people suffer from chronic sodium deficiency precisely because they mindlessly limit it.

So when you swap your morning espresso for a glass of water with a little salt, your body gets exactly what it needs after a night out – hydration, minerals and a calm start instead of a caffeine shock. If you have trouble drinking salt water because of its taste, you can flavor it with a squeeze of lemon.
