Dawson’s world is familiar to everyone in my neighborhood. And it doesn’t matter so much the generation. My older siblings watched it actively, I was more of a spectator as a young child, but I still remember many of the scenes. And many of my peers loved it. When I write “him”, I’m referring not only to the show, but specifically to actor James Van Der Beek, who played the lead role in 182 episodes. However, on Wednesday, sad news swept the world. On February 11, 2026, the charismatic dreamer Dawson Leery lost his battle with an insidious disease and left us forever.

The information shocked many. We remember him as a handsome young man who wanted to change the world a little bit. “It wasn’t so long ago. He must have been young.” That was the reaction from my grandparents. Although Dawson’s World was more of a teen drama, it appealed to older generations as well. And yes, James Van Der Beek did die at an early age. He was only 48 years old.

He was battling an insidious disease

The announcement of his death appeared, among other things, on his Instagram profile. “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed away peacefully this morning. He lived his last days with faith, courage, dignity,” the post reads, among other things. The family further asked for peace and privacy so that they can pay their respects in a dignified manner to the actor, but most importantly to their beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend.

James Van Der Beek had already statedthree years ago that he had colon cancer. At that time, he confided that he was taking steps to cure it privately, praising his family who had helped him greatly in the situation. He announced everything publicly only because the media had got hold of the information and he wanted to comment on it himself. He kept the cancer a secret from his many friends, who unfortunately learned the shocking news in this way. In 2024 he stated that there were hopes that his condition was improving. But unfortunately, he was not able to conquer the disease in the end.

He didn’t give up acting

He became famous mainly in the 90s as Dawson Leery, but he has many other roles to his credit. As a youngster, he appeared in the sports drama Varsity Blues, where he played Jonathan. He then played an FBI agent in the 2014-2016 series CSI: Cyber. In 2020, he moved from bustling Los Angeles to a quieter part of the US. But even after he was diagnosed with cancer, he didn’t stop acting.

He tried to fight to the last minute and devote himself to what he loved: his family, but also his work. His efforts to live life to the full despite a very poor prognosis should be an inspiration to many people. James Van Der Beek and his wife Kimberly raised daughters Olivia, Annabel, Emily and Gwendolyn and sons Joshua and Jeremiah. His family meant a lot to him in his life, and she now asks fans to especially respect her and take time to grieve their loss.
