Have you noticed your dog whining or barking while sleeping? Or is his nose twitching or jerking? That’s one of his dreams at that moment. Yes, even dogs can dream. But do we know what they dream about? Let’s solve this mystery.

What does science say about dog dreams?

Although dreams are mainly attributed to humans, according to scientists, almost any vertebrate can dream. Both humans and animals go through several cycles during sleep, the most important being the REM phase, during which you are currently dreaming. Experts note that dogs experience their dreams in the same way as their owners. Since they also spend most of the day sleeping, they are all the more inclined to dream.

In dogs, sleep cycles vary according to the size of the breed. Experts report that larger breeds enter REM sleep about every 90 minutes, so they have fewer dreams, but much longer ones. While smaller breeds enter this stage roughly every 10 minutes, having more dreams, but they are short.

What do dogs dream about?

It’s been proven that dogs dream about similar things to you. Their dreams involve everyday experiences that become more creative or are supplemented by other downstream events. Their dreaming is not logical as much as it is visual, as their dreams relate to what they like. Therefore, their owners often enter them.

Your dog may dream of you throwing him a ball, taking a walk or cuddling in the comfort of your home. They also often dream about food or toys. In short, they dream about quite ordinary things and people to whom they are emotionally attached.

“Dogs are generally extremely attached to their human owners, and it’s likely that your dog dreams about your face, your smell, and pleasing or annoying you,” explained psychologist Deirdre Barrett of Harvard University.

In dreams, they also often relive moments when they were barking and trying to protect their owner. In the aftermath, they may then dream about similar situations, complete with other events.
