Memory affects every moment of our lives – it determines what we remember, what we overlook and how well we can react to new situations. Although it sometimes seems erratic, it can be trained and strengthened. Let’s take a look at how it actually works and why its development is worthwhile.
Memory is one of the most complex abilities of the human brain. It stores information in layers according to importance and type – from immediate sensory memory to short-term memory, which holds only a few things at a time, to long-term memory, where memories, skills and knowledge remain. But our memory is not perfect. It is affected by attention, emotions, fatigue and how much the information makes sense to us.
The good news is that memory can be strengthened just like muscles. Regular studying, reading, solving puzzles, keeping track of details, as well as a healthy lifestyle – quality sleep, exercise and a balanced diet – can help. Mnemonics, i.e. various aids to remembering: associations, stories, visualisations or rhythm, are also very effective. The more senses we engage, the better we can store and recall information.
A strong memory increases productivity, facilitates learning, helps in work and everyday life and promotes overall mental fitness. People with trained memory tend to be more observant and better at noticing details around them.
And details are the key in our quiz. But first, take a close look at the picture below.
