Maybe you’ve had a time when you didn’t feel physically well. So you have had various examinations and many visits to doctors. The result? Medically speaking, you are healthy. Traditionally, medicine looks for obvious physical signs that would lead to illness, but often neglects the mental state of the patient. In fact, psychosomatics has a significant impact on physical health.
What is psychosomatics?
Psychosomatics is a field that combines psychology and conventional medicine. It explores the connections between the body and the mind, meaning that it helps to understand how your thoughts, emotions and life experiences affect your physical health. Your inner world holds everything you have experienced, including memories you don’t remember in addition to feelings. Once these experiences become stressful, they put a lot of strain on your nervous system. You can then suppress or ignore them, which allows your body to deal with it in its own way. Psychosomatic symptoms emerge, including headaches and muscle aches, fatigue, indigestion, tremors or a racing heart.
The psychosomatic condition is therefore based on emotional stress and distress, which then manifests itself in physical illness. Hence the nature of the name, since ‘psycho’ means ‘relating to the mind’ and ‘somatic’ means ‘relating to the body’.

It is common to fall ill at the least opportune moment. However, the body creates this manifestation deliberately, because it tells you to stop and attend to your health. It is actually a kind of protective reaction that is caused by mental or physical overload. If you remain in internal tension for a long time, you develop psychosomatic diseases.
The most common triggers are long-term stress, anxiety or depression. If you suppress all these internal states and do not express them externally, the body will start to show physical signs. Other psychosomatic causes are lack of rest and sleep, relationship problems or guilt. Simply put, anything that is constantly bothering you and that your psyche is exposed to can be included here.
The most common psychosomatic illnesses
The psyche can contribute to the onset and development of various illnesses or worsening of symptoms. These include arthritis and other inflammatory diseases, diabetes, Crohn’s disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, various types of skin problems such as psoriasis and eczema, seizures and sleep disorders.
Many studies even suggest that excessive and prolonged stress, together with psychological exhaustion, can lead to the promotion of cancer. This does not mean that they cause it themselves. However, mental distress can affect the immune system, hormonal balance, and the way the body deals with illness.
Psychosomatic illnesses are not hysteria
When you visit a doctor with physical symptoms, you often find that they don’t give you a diagnosis. On the contrary, you learn that you are perfectly healthy because your physical condition is not conducive to any illness. This often leads to the feeling that you are seen as a hypochondriac or a hysteric. If you are not even aware that you are suffering from a psychosomatic illness, your condition may go untreated for a long time. However, the doctor should have a dialogue with you in which the psychological condition should not be neglected.
