My grandmother was always very particular about her appearance. She’s in her 70s, but not many people would guess her age. Most people guess a little over 60. My grandmother likes to take care of herself, but most of all, she has always lived a healthy lifestyle and taken care of what her body needs. And that’s the way it should be. I’ve known women her age who beautify themselves with beauty products every day, but they can’t hide their real age. And in some cases, they’re hurting their health.
Modern women often focus on their appearance even at an older age. But very often they do it in the wrong way. What makes a person younger is primarily how they keep fit. Anti-wrinkle creams and medical procedures do not help in the long run. On the contrary, experts agree that overdoing it to look good can cause health problems in older women.
It’s true that society nowadays pushes appearance. And that older women want to feel welcomed by their peers, as well as by the younger community. It’s just that letting this influence them to ruin their health by beautification procedures at any cost is not quite right.
How does health care hurt older women?
Many women think that if they start taking care of themselves late in life, they will look good in their old age. That creams, miracle supplements, going to the tanning salon and medical procedures can improve their skin. But often they hurt themselves more. Cosmetic procedures, for example, come with risks. “These include burns, infections, scarring, swelling and a stiff facial expression,” warns the American Academy of Dermatology.
Recently, a neighbor stopped by her grandmother’s house. After a cosmetic procedure, her appearance changed dramatically. She may look younger, but you can see that her overall appearance is now “artificial.” She admitted it herself. Her grandmother gently lied to her that it wasn’t so bad, but in my opinion she had better tell her the truth so that her neighbour wouldn’t get the idea to repeat the same action.
Skin is prone to complications at an older age. Thus, if even beauty creams are used excessively often by people, it then easily happens that they in turn cause skin irritation. This only demotivates the person to take care of themselves, plus there are psychological consequences and fear of social exclusion in the elderly, warns the American Academy of Facial Esthetics.

My grandmother always did a lot of work around the house in the garden, went for long walks, ate healthy, and ate mostly home-cooked meals. She was never too fond of chemicals and preferred natural products. All this was reflected in her. But it’s not just that she’s been acting this way for the last few years. Rather, it’s a long-lasting effect that has been compounding for decades.
If you want to look good, you simply need to keep fit. Even experts state that one-off treatments hardly make a person beautiful, rather it’s about what you do for yourself in the long term. If you want to feel good among your peers as an older person, don’t overdo it. Wear what you are comfortable in, be modern and move with the times. But a ton of make-up won’t make you a queen at 70, rather it will give you health problems.
