In the modern home, we often encounter two annoyances: the smell that lingers in various rooms and the appearance of limescale, which is particularly troublesome in bathrooms or on kitchen taps. Many commercial cleaning products promise a quick solution, but they are not always reliable. But there is a simple trick that requires just a lemon and one other common kitchen ingredient.

There is no need to buy expensive products, which often contain unnecessary chemicals and also do not work reliably. Often you can deal with problems in the kitchen just by using what you have at home. Lemon can be found in every household. However, vinegar is also an excellent helper. I’m sure everyone has vinegar at home.

Why lemon?

Lemon is not just a refreshing fruit. In addition to vitamin C, it also contains a significant amount of acids that play a key role in household cleaning. Research indicates that this tropical food has approximately 8% of its dry weight in the form of citric acid. This acid acts as a light inorganic acid that can break down limescale deposits (mainly calcium and magnesium carbonate).

Lemon also gives your home a pleasant fresh scent. It even not only beats odours, but eliminates their source, for example in the pantry, fridge or sink waste. Plus, thanks to its natural nature, you don’t have to worry about the aggressiveness of chemicals.

Vinegar as a powerful helper

Vinegar helps in the home against odours and limescale thanks to its acetic acid content, which has natural cleaning and disinfecting effects. It is therefore a very similar case to that of the aforementioned lemon. The acidic pH of vinegar is around 2,5. This neutralises odour molecules and breaks down mineral deposits that form limescale.

A study published in 2023 states that a 5% acetic acid solution effectively dissolves mineral deposits, grease and organic impurities. At the same time, it also inhibits the growth of bacteria, which are often the cause of unpleasant odours. This is why vinegar is used not only as a natural cleaner, but also as an air freshener and an environmentally friendly alternative to chemicals.

Practical guide for cleaning the kitchen

If you want a clean, limescale-free kitchen at home and a fresh smell to boot, the process is easy:

  • Squeeze the juice of a lemon into a bowl.
  • Add warm water. The ideal is to use about a litre of water per lemon.
  • Apply the solution to the affected area. Rub it on the faucet, sink, pour it down the drain.
  • Let it sit for 20 minutes
  • Flush everything with clean warm water, then another batch of cold water.

Similar to the lemon, use vinegar for cleaning. There, however, choose a different concentration when creating the solution, usually about 5-10 tablespoons of vinegar per 1 litre of warm water is recommended, depending on the state of the limescale damage.
