Dog lovers and owners can celebrate. Today, 26 August, is International Dog Day. It’s not just an ordinary day as it celebrates their importance in the human world. How and why did this holiday come about in the first place? And what is its significance?

Dogs have always been the companions of humans as they form an inseparable pair. There are many breeds and each of them is unique in some way. But one thing unites them all. The love and loyalty that only they can offer people. Canine devotion knows no bounds.

The origins of International Dog Day

Thus, every year on 26 August, International Dog Day is held in their honour . It was created in 2004 by Colleen Paige, an avid advocate for animal protection, author and pet lifestyle expert. The idea to instigate the creation of this day came from her desire to draw attention to the condition of dogs and encourage their adoption from shelters. She believes the public should be aware of how many dogs need to be rescued each year.

Many shelters are overcrowded, and every dog’s soul is waiting for the moment when a kindred spirit will choose him or her. The goal was to highlight this issue, while also showing people how to properly care for pets. Equally, she felt it was important to highlight the responsibility you gain for a dog once you get it. Many people forget that a dog is not a toy, but a living being that you can’t just put down.

This day thus celebrates all breeds, regardless of origin, pays tribute to dogs living in families, but also to those who serve in public service as rescues and highlights those abandoned who also deserve a home. Their role in people’s lives is important and should not be forgotten.

Why on this day?

The date August 26th is very significant and special for Colleen Paige. On this day, her family adopted a dog named Sheltie from a shelter near her home. She was 10 years old at the time, and since then her heart has belonged to dogs and other animals who have not met a good fate.

It’s obvious that she truly lives for animals as she is extensively involved in philanthropy. She has also founded other days of celebration which include International Puppy Day, International Cat Day, International Wildlife Day and many more. All of these important holidays are united by a desire to draw attention to the plight of animals around the world and to encourage their adoption.

How to celebrate this day?

International Dog Day should not be a mere mention on the calendar. You can celebrate it with your pet by taking them for a walk or buying them a treat. At the same time, sharing photos of dogs with the hashtag #NationalDogDay has become a big thing on social media.

And what’s the best way to support this day? By adopting a dog from a shelter or donating food, toys, blankets or money. Even a little help is appreciated.
