You must have heard that it can be used against all kinds of odours in household cleaning, to deal with limescale and so on. However, vinegar also has uses in laundry. It can help you with stain removal, odor removal, or mold elimination. In addition, however, it is suitable as a replacement for fabric softener. It has natural softening properties.
Sounds strange at first. Vinegar doesn’t smell good. On the contrary. Its smell is pungent. But vinegar can actually help soften clothes. It breaks down the excess detergent that makes clothes stiff. But beware. If you add bleach to your laundry, don’t add vinegar. This combination is highly toxic.
When not to use vinegar
We have already warned that vinegar together with any bleach would be toxic. However, there are other situations when using vinegar to soften laundry is not appropriate at all. It’s definitely not a good idea to use vinegar on stretchy clothes or other sportswear. The acid could break down the elastic bands. Moreover, it is not advisable to wash with vinegar often. You should know that you cannot wash every load of laundry with vinegar. It could take a toll on delicate fabrics.
Just add it to the fabric softener dispenser once a week or pour it in during the last soak. Your laundry will be perfectly soft. However, if you don’t use vinegar primarily for softness, then baking soda can be substituted. This can brighten fabrics and neutralise odours. It also helps with stains. However, it probably won’t soften the laundry.
