Travelling to foreign countries can be very stressful. I personally love to see new places and I always look forward to going somewhere new. But at the same time, planning brings with it stress and uncertainty. Even if you prepare for almost everything, things can go wrong. The cases of several Germans who have been taken into custody on recent trips to the USA simply because they did not have valid passports are proof of this. Or rather, they had something extra in them.

Stories like this make me personally nervous and make travelling perhaps more of an adventure than one would expect. On the other hand, after reading such information, one will be careful not to let such things happen to them. Traveling to the US is obviously more complicated than one would think these days. One extra stamp in your passport can mean that you will not be able to enter the country, or even that you will be in big trouble.

A visa does not mean automatic entry into the country

If you want to travel to countries outside the EU, you need a passport. However, for some countries this is not enough. You also need a visa. Since 2009, you can use the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) instead of a visa. This is an electronic travel authorization system used by the U.S. government. ESTA is, simply put, an automated system designed to determine visitors’ eligibility to travel to the U.S. However, the decision on whether to allow you into the US is always made by an official upon arrival.

If you have a regular wine passport, ESTA should usually be sufficient in lieu of a visa. You fill out the information on the application at least 3 days before you arrive in the US and you don’t have to worry about the visa any more. It’s just that it’s been emphasized lately that an electronic travel authorization system doesn’t necessarily mean seamless entry into the country. You need to check that you don’t have an extra stamp in your passport.

When is ESTA insufficient?

ESTA excludes from its program persons who have resided in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, North Korea or Yemen after March 1, 2011. In addition, those who have traveled to Cuba after January 11, 2021. These people need a regular visa to enter the U.S., which must be obtained from the appropriate U.S. diplomatic mission.

This rule was put in place to help the U.S. minimize the risk of terrorism. Indeed, according to the local government, people who have been exposed to extremist or terrorist groups can enjoy visa-free entry without undergoing a more thorough security screening at the embassy. So, if you have a date stamp in your passport from that country and you do not have a visa, you will not be allowed into the US.

This is information that many people only find out at the airport, which is why there is unnecessary confusion and sometimes even arrests of innocent people. This fact confirms that, no matter how much preparation you do, sometimes a situation can arise when travelling that you do not expect. And as a person who loves to travel, but also gets stressed out very easily, that certainly doesn’t reassure me.
