The winter months are long and bring with them cold or even freezing weather. As a result, we often have to heat our homes throughout the day. This results in relatively high energy bills. In Finland, where winter lasts a long time and is bitterly cold, they know this. To save money, Finns use several tricks to keep their homes warmer. Try this too.

Why they look for simple ideas

Finland’s winters are colder than ours. But heating costs are rising in the Nordic country just as much as they are here. For this reason, Finns are looking for ways to save money and not freeze at home. Naturally, they reach for more layers of clothing first. They wear warm slippers on their feet and sweaters or functional clothing on their bodies. They also only heat the rooms they actually use. They understand that it is useless to heat all rooms unless they spend time in them. Try it too. Do you spend time mainly in the living room and kitchen? Then you don’t have to heat the bedroom. Maybe it’s enough to open the door to that room later.

A very ordinary candle

Have you ever thought that a decorative candle can bring you more than just a smile on your face and a pleasant feeling of relaxation? A candle can be a source of dim light and also a heating accessory. If you light more of them in your living room, they will bring you some of that warmth too. A great addition to a central heating system, right?

Did you know that one candle produces between 30 and 80 watts? Of course, you can’t use candles as a sole and stand-alone heat source, but maybe five candles can raise the ambient temperature much like a small heater. If the room is also well insulated, the temperature difference can be quite substantial.

It’s all about comfort

Candles can help warm the air in your environment and also reduce the feeling of cold. In addition, they make your sitting area more pleasant overall. Just imagine. You spend all day taking care of the kids, running errands in the city, or spending it at work. In the evening, you want to relax. There’s nothing more pleasant than brewing yourself a hot chocolate or a mug of herbal tea, sitting down with it under a warm blanket and lighting a candle to accentuate the atmosphere.

Of course, you don’t have to light a candle only in the evening. It can also have a relaxing effect if you work from home or simply spend your free time at home. Due to the fact that the heat and light is emotional, the candle will have a great effect not only on your body but also on your soul. Mental well-being is exactly what each of us needs to feel good.

Fire as a source of warmth

Of course, there are even more ways to use fire. If you have the opportunity, you can get a fireplace or wood-burning stove for your house. Obviously, wood for heating will also cost you, however, you will save on electricity or gas payments. And if you spend your time primarily in one room of the house, you don’t necessarily have to heat the whole house.

Of course, the downside of heating with wood in a fireplace can be a bit of a mess and having to bring wood into the home that is usually stored outside. However, if you get used to it, it’s not a total hassle. What’s more, a fireplace will reward you with amazing warmth, which is completely different to that of a central heating system. And as a bonus, you’ll create a lovely romantic atmosphere. Some people have a fireplace on TV for effect, others have a real one and reap all the benefits.
