Have you ever thought that diet has a major impact on the appearance of your face? According to French researchers, people who eat a breakfast high in refined carbohydrates are not as attractive as people who eat a different type of breakfast. In addition, other research reports that the type and quality of carbohydrates that women consume around their 40s and 50s can affect their aging.
The impact of carbohydrates on health
The second half of the 20th century saw an increase in the consumption of refined sugars. And this has understandably had health effects that are highly harmful to humans. These include insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity or dental caries. But that is not quite all. Certain physiological mechanisms, such as chronic hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia, suggest that carbohydrates could also affect facial attractiveness.
Research on women has taken years
Harvard researchers followed more than 47,500 women for more than 30 years. All of these women were 49 years old at the beginning of the study. The experts compared the types of carbohydrates the women said they consumed with the likelihood that they would maintain their health in old age. Specifically, the women were predicted to have good mental health in old age and to avoid heart disease and illnesses such as cancer or diabetes. Furthermore, the research also concerned the absence of memory problems and physical limitations.
They found that women who consumed more high-quality carbohydrates were 6 to 37 percent more likely to maintain their health as they got older. Their diets included mostly whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes. In contrast, women who consumed mainly white bread, sweet snacks and potatoes were 13% less likely to age healthily.

According to them, people who ate breakfasts rich in refined carbohydrates were indeed rated as less attractive than those who started the day healthier. Thus, the researchers from the University of Montpellier believe that the subtle change in facial attractiveness may be due precisely to changes in blood sugar and insulin levels.
But it’s not just the short-term effects, but also the long-term effect on sex hormones. According to Dr. Claire Berticat, evolutionary biologist and lead author of the study, physiological changes can subtly affect facial features. Add to that the fact that this diet also affects middle-aged women in terms of their aging and health, and it would be a good idea to think about what is appropriate to eat for breakfast. We all want to be beautiful and healthy.
So what to eat to look chic
According to David Perrett, professor of psychology at the University of St Andrews, it should come as no surprise that diet can influence attractiveness. Fruits and vegetables improve attractiveness by increasing the amount ofplant pigments called carotenoids in the skin. So it’s definitely a good idea to include as many vegetables and fruits in your diet as possible, ideally in their raw state. You can incorporate fruit into your breakfast in a variety of ways.
For example, try oatmeal or rice porridge with fresh fruit. Add your favourite berries to white yoghurt or eat fruit on its own. If you prefer a savoury breakfast, try wholemeal bread with cereal and vegetables. You can use some of the vegetables to make great spreads, for example. Try cutting refined sugar out of your drinks too.
