Grandparents’ Day, Grandparents’ Day is a holiday that pays tribute to those who often stand at the roots of our families. This holiday aims to recognize the role of grandparents for passing on experiences and keeping the love between generations. At the same time, the day also commemorates the importance of family ties as a cultural heritage in the US.
Grandparents Day is an opportunity to thank our grandparents for what they do for us. For their support and care. But it’s not just about what they do for us within the family, it’s about their role in society. It’s a day full of gratitude that should be spent together with family if one has the opportunity.
It was created in the 1970s
Grandparents Day was created in 1978. Then President Jimmy Carter signed an executive order establishing it, and the first celebrations were held a year later. Activist Marian McQuade is behind the creation of this great day. In the early 1970s, she campaigned for the love of grandparents to be celebrated in a big way and for a day that paid tribute to them.
In the USA in general, family cohesion and respect for older generations has long been emphasised. The holiday was thus created, among other things, in response to the need to remember the importance of older people who have much experience and can pass on more than just family love to their friends and relatives.
Gratitude and respect
Grandparents’ Day is a holiday that should remind people of three main things:
- That they should be grateful to their grandparents for their love, care and support.
- That grandparents connect generations, share stories from the past and teach us new things.
- That the elderly are the bearers of wisdom and we should show them respect.
━━ It is not just a celebration of grandparents and their love for their grandchildren, but a celebration of the love of the whole family.

In the USA, Grandparents Day falls on the first Sunday after the American Labor Day. It is usually in early September. The date was deliberately chosen because it is a time when families often gather after summer vacations at the beginning of the school year. Labor Day is a day when everyone has the day off and takes time to visit family.
The following days are then the perfect time to share time with loved ones, to share family stories, to pass on information about what’s new and what each family member is up to. Grandparents Day is becoming more popular every year. Even after all these years, it is not losing its tradition; on the contrary, more and more people are celebrating it.
