When people talk about preparing for spring, you probably think of the time when winter is over. In reality, however, preparations need to start much earlier, in autumn. This is when you need to consider what you want to plant in your garden in the spring, and also when you need to prepare the soil for overwintering.

The garden: time to sow the future

September is usually a time of harvest and preparation for the coming winter. This is the time to consider which plants will beautify and enrich your garden. Many of these need to be planted during the autumn. These are particularly bulbous plants, including tulips and daffodils. This is the only way to give them a chance to take root and get ready to bloom in early spring. Similarly for perennials, which benefit from the moisture and persistent favourable temperatures of autumn. They will then reward you with a flood of beautiful flowers in spring.

The soil itself needs rest. Once you’ve harvested the entire crop, it’s time for the soil to rest and prepare for the growing season.

Trees and shrubs rest in peace

Nature changes during September. Trees turn beautiful colours and store nutrients in their roots to survive the winter. As is the case with plants, if you plant a fruit tree at this time, it will have plenty of room to take root. They will have time to rest and prepare for spring growth, which will be much easier.

Seeds that need winter

Seeds are not left behind when it comes to autumn planting. It is essential that they survive the winter cold so that they can wake up to life and germinate in the spring. If you allow them to go through the necessary natural process from September onwards, they will sprout on their own once the winter is over and determine what is best for them.

Birds and insects seek refuge

The autumn preparation also catches up with birds and insects. While some birds fly away in search of warmth, others stay and forage for food, while insects seek shelter in which to survive the winter.

The circle of life never stops

Autumn seems to be the final station that nature reaches at the end of the year. However, this is not entirely true, as the circle of life never ends. It merely moves into the next phase, which is important for spring growth, renewal and energy.

Spring begins in September

Walking through an autumn garden, you may feel that all the work is over before the spring season comes again. However, the opposite is true, as spring begins in September. Everything you do now will have an effect on the plants and trees once winter has gone. Anyone who is aware of this fact can look forward to the germination of life in early spring.
