Toilet blocks are not exactly a cheap affair. Moreover, they disappear quite quickly and have to be replaced with new ones. And some of them don’t even keep the toilet clean. Try making your own home-made solution that will get you excited. You’ll only need one simple thing to do it. It may sound too simple to work. You’ll have to see for yourself.
Toilet odour
Unpleasant toilet odour is the reason why people keep reaching for bizarre deodorising tricks on the internet. One of the relatively new tricks, which you can also see on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube, is the use of ordinary solid soap. Some tutorials talk about just unwrapping the cube from its packaging and throwing it into the toilet cistern. Others talk about some preparation like grating the soap to put into a punctured plastic bottle. We recommend a similar but improved trick. You can make such toilet balls at home yourself. They’ll keep it clean and odor-free.
It works really well. The soap releases slowly. That means your toilet gets a certain amount of soap every time you flush. If you want to make the cleaner even better, it’s a good idea to mix the soap with salt and baking soda. You grate the soap, add the baking soda and salt and a small amount of water to make a stiff paste. Then shape into balls and leave them to set, ideally on baking paper from which they will come off easily. The balls are then ideally placed in a case that will hold them in the toilet.
Why not throw them in the tank
Of course, you can take the soap balls and throw them straight into the water tank. After all, some instructions say that. You just don’t want the soap balls floating freely in the tank. The reason is simple. Throwing soap balls or whole bars of soap into the tank is not advisable. It can lead to serious plumbing problems. The cistern is the mechanism that is supposed to flush the water. Not chemicals or dissolved soap.
Soap breaks down and forms a film that could cover moving parts inside the cistern. And those parts should remain clean to function as they should. If the parts become clogged with soap coating, the flush may not work. And you definitely won’t be happy that you saved on toilet odor if you have to pay for an expensive repair and hours of labor to a plumber. Not to mention that some modern toilets have the cistern built in and you just can’t get to it that easily.
Another option besides soap
Want to make your bathroom smell good and the soap trick didn’t work for you? There are plenty of alternatives that you can choose from. A completely simple and extra natural solution is a bowl of baking soda in the toilet. Soda absorbs odors in tight spaces. Diffusers with essential oils of your choice or activated charcoal sachets are also other safe alternatives. And if you like the idea of soap, you can also use soap when cleaning. How about dissolving grated soap in hot water, putting it in a spray bottle and spraying the mixture on the toilet and seat? This will clean the toilet perfectly and make it smell great.
