Clothes make the man, that is an age-old truth. It sounds like a cliché, but it’s actually true. Clothes can help you feel younger, but they can also make you look much older. Clothes can even be a kind of cure for depression. It’s just important not to overdo it. Clothes can make a woman in her sixties look youthful, but they can also make her look like a comical ghost. So how to do it?
What to avoid?
If you still want to look chic and youthful, be sure to avoid too many pastel outfits, but it’s not advisable to use mostly black either. It’s definitely not a good idea to hide your figure in baggy clothes. And remember, too, that the basis of everything is fitting underwear, possibly even flattering tights that don’t look old-fashioned. And the whole outfit must be accentuated with a suitable lipstick, because even an unflattering lipstick can ruin everything perfectly.
Brands for women in their prime
There aren’t many of them, but there are brands that target women in their prime. One of the few brands that targets women in their 50s is Hope Fashion. It was launched in 2015 by Nayna McIntosh, former head of lifestyle at M&S stores. After all, it is M&S that also offers suitable clothing. And quite possibly you’ll find other brands too.
The problem is often that these brands don’t want to communicate directly with their customers. Because nobody wants to be told that they are an older customer. Maybe the key to communication would be to label women in their fifties or sixties in a more flattering way. The question is how to make it clear who the brand is aimed at. It’s definitely confusing. And it’s not easy to find an appropriate brand at this age.

It is a fact that a woman at a certain age ceases to be considered relevant to fashion. Clothes for older women are no longer so widely available and campaigns tend to focus more on young women. It’s as if older women are suddenly excluded from all conversations about fashion. It’s like they have nothing to say anymore. Yet if you look closely, you’ll see that your new floral dress looks equally good on you and your mum who’s in her sixties. And maybe she can wear it with more class.
It’s important to remember that it’s not really about age, it’s about style. After all, today’s women in their sixties were young in the days of the Sex Pistols and the Rolling Stones. It’s a generation that certainly didn’t let anything dictate them. Today’s generation of grandmothers grew up in a time when breaking the rules and reshaping them was practically the order of the day. We have a lot to learn from them. They definitely don’t belong to the old guard and deserve to look chic.
