Glasses are not uncommon nowadays among the young or the elderly. Some people wear them for reading, but more and more people wear glasses for distance. This is due, among other things, to today’s times, when our eyesight is naturally deteriorating due to the constant monitoring of mobile phones and computer monitors. I myself have been wearing glasses for 15 years and many of my friends are in a very similar situation. I have a friend who, until recently, often complained of headaches. When I tried on his glasses recently out of curiosity, I understood why he was having problems. Because he could hardly see anything through the lenses.

Our diopters are the same, so it was clear that the blurry vision was simply because his glasses were dirty. I explained to him that clean glasses can prevent headaches. “Ahaa, is that why you’re always polishing them with the tip of your shirt?” he poked at me. He may have picked up a habit that is not entirely appropriate, but at the same time, he has also stopped complaining about headaches since then. Yes, partly because he knew what kind of remark would come from my side. But on the other hand, a really clean pair of glasses means fewer health problems.

Glasses and headaches

Glasses are an aid that improves our health. It shouldn’t be the other way around. However, many people don’t realize that if you have smudges on your glasses and look into the distance at objects through them, it has a negative impact on more than just your eyes. This is because if you strain your eyes unnecessarily, your eyes become tired and your eyesight deteriorates, which is also associated with more frequent headaches.

“Sometimes you don’t even notice it, but you squint through dirty glasses, your muscles clench and your whole face pays the price,” says optometrist Brieann Adair. She warns that you may suffer health problems, but in addition to that, it’s also easier for wrinkles to form on your stressed cheeks. So it’s important to clean your glasses regularly.

Clean your glasses regularly, but above all correctly

Yes, I often take my glasses off my eyes and wipe them with a t-shirt. This, as already hinted at in the introduction, is not ideal. I often wear a t-shirt for several days, it is not very clean and can scratch the glasses. So I prefer to follow the advice of the experts and wipe my glasses with special tissues that are designed for this purpose. You can buy cloth wipes for glasses, but also wet paper ones. They also sell sprays to get more dirt off your glasses.

You should never wash your glasses with water and spring or other detergents. “Soaps and oils can also stain your lenses permanently, or simply damage them so badly that you can’t use them anymore,” warns optometrist William C. Fruchtman. Be careful about cleaning your glasses with harsh materials and liquids that have chemicals in them. If you wear glasses, you know how expensive they are. You definitely don’t want to ruin them.

Personally, I usually try to carry special glasses cleaning supplies directly with me, but sometimes laziness wins out and I simply clean them with whatever is handy. In my opinion, everyone will do this at some point and it’s still better than straining your eyes over dirty glass. But you need to clean your glasses gently and be really careful not to ruin the glass.
