The New Year is full of superstitions and traditions. Some are about food, others about housework or financial matters. But how many of us really know what all we should or should not do? Test your knowledge in our quiz!
New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are some of the most watched holidays of the year, with many superstitions and traditions surrounding them. While some customs are almost automatic, others have fallen into the background and are often not even known by the younger generation.
The rules for the first day of the year cover all sorts of areas of life. From household chores to financial matters to dressing, folk wisdom says that each of these activities has its own rules. Breaking certain taboos can bring bad luck for the whole year to come, according to superstition.
Czech traditions associated with the New Year period are based on a combination of Christian customs and older pagan rituals. Many of them originally had a protective or attraction function – they were supposed to bring health, wealth or good fortune to the household.
Surveys show that eighty percent of Czechs do not know exactly which activities are not recommended for New Year’s Day and why. Yet many of these superstitions have a centuries-old tradition and can still be encountered, even though many people take them with humour rather than seriously. Our quiz will tell you whether you are a connoisseur of New Year’s customs, or whether you still have a lot to learn!
