They have worked all their lives, taken care of their children, and in old age they have a problem with their finances. This is the situation of many seniors in different parts of the world. This is also a problem in Brazil. That is why they have devised a safety net to guarantee dignity and financial security for the elderly. I applaud this decision. It is a small thank you for what the elderly have done for themselves, their families and the nation throughout their lives.

Property tax

This tax arouses passions. Paying a lifetime for something we bought with our own money is kind of ridiculous. However, most of us accept it as fact. In several Brazilian cities, at least seniors do not have to pay this tax. In fact, they have the right to apply for a full or partial exemption from this tax. However, the benefit is not automatic and depends on the specific rules of each municipality.

In general, the benefit is granted on residential property used as the seniors’ own home. Of course, seniors must complete an application and provide various documents to be exempt. This mainly involves providing proof of residence or a certificate of market value. Proof of income is also required.

Free medication

We only have one health, and unfortunately, as we get older, health ailments and the need to take medication often arise. It really distresses me when I hear how much money my grandmother leaves at the pharmacy. In Brazil, they have solved this perfectly. The law stipulates free provision of medicines and also prostheses and braces necessary for treatment.

These are mainly medicines that the elderly have to take on a long-term basis. As a result, there cannot be a situation where a senior does not have the financial means to pay for the medication and therefore does not take it. The elderly are thus relieved financially and moreover, it is ensured that their health will be served within their means as they will adhere to the treatment without any difficulty. Such a measure makes sense.

Public transport

There are cities around the world that subsidise transport for all local residents. The aim is to reduce the number of cars in the city and get people onto public transport. Brazilians over the age of 65 can ride for free not only public transport but also suburban transport. In some cities, this benefit even applies to people over 60. Seniors only need to show an official photo ID or a senior citizen card issued by the local transport authority. This allows them to go shopping or to the doctor without the stress of wondering where they will get the money.

Social tariff for electricity as a bonus

Electricity bills are one of the most significant expenses in Brazilians’ budgets. However, there is an official government program that can reduce seniors’ electricity expenses. It can provide a discount of up to 65% in certain situations. This benefit aims to reduce electricity bills for low-income Brazilian families who are enrolled in government social programs. The rebate varies depending on monthly electricity consumption, reaching up to 65% for consumption up to 30 kWh. This percentage gradually decreases as consumption increases, but remains significant even at higher consumption levels.
