Our habits say a lot about us. So if you tell someone that you drink strictly black coffee without milk and sugar, you’re saying a lot more about yourself than just that one sentence. You’re not just talking about liking that particular drink. Psychologists say that this choice says a lot about people. Is it you who drinks black coffee or someone in your family? I personally prefer coffee with milk, my husband drinks it with sugar. But the rest of our family prefers black coffee.

Rooted in faith

I can’t imagine a morning without coffee. It’s just a habit, a ritual. For many others too, of course. But psychology tells us that the choice of coffee is not just based on a love of the taste. If you drink black coffee, it says something about you that you have a deep-seated belief in strength and independence. It’s strange, isn’t it? But by something as simple as choosing coffee, you’re actually telling the world about yourself that you’re tough and don’t need comfort.

But that’s not the only thing. There’s talk that black coffee says a lot more about you. Black coffee is simple. Beans, water. Nothing more. If that’s your choice, then chances are you appreciate simple choices in life. In the case of just one step, you don’t want to make ten extra ones unnecessarily. You don’t like complicated plans. No changes. No complicated calls. Is that right?

Conscientious people

A 2024 study in the journal Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews found a slight but significant genetic overlap between habitual caffeine use and the Big Five trait of conscientiousness. In other words, the same neural tripwires that keep a person organized, punctual, and goal-oriented nudge them toward a reliable stimulant like black coffee.

The courage to be yourself

Contented people are those who know when to be strong and when it’s good to give themselves some comfort. You’re probably a person who doesn’t mind spending a little time alone. It might even be fulfilling for you. Going to the movies all alone? No problem. People turn to you for advice. You seem stable and independent. Your opinion of others seems fresh because you don’t always follow trends. You always weigh your options, listen, and then choose what fits your values.

Tolerance of discomfort

Black coffee is not the least bit sweet and is actually a little bitter. In fact, that’s why I don’t drink it personally. However, for those of you who like it, it says that you have a tolerance for discomfort. Tough deadlines at work? Stress? It’s not something you can run away from. You’ll face it. You breathe and then you focus on the important tasks. You move on. You’ll get through it.

Coffee and health

Let’s go back from psychology to coffee itself. Black coffee is good for your body. No unnecessary fats and sugars. Moderate coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, with these benefits attributed in part to the polyphenols and magnesium in coffee.
