Neat, shiny and ideally also painted nails have become a cosmetic trend. Polishing in particular is a big hit. Women polish their nails frequently to achieve the perfect salon-like shine. Unfortunately, however, this can cause more harm than good. And even nail polish doesn’t help. Frequent polishing can also damage the nails.

Some ladies often visit beauty salons to have their nails done. Usually a manicure is a great way to feel confident and at ease. The process itself can be an experience and time for a woman to just be by herself. Women often make an appointment for a manicure after three weeks, but this is early. On average, it can take four to six weeks for your natural nail to fully grow from cuticle to tip. That’s how long you should be going to the salon.

The reason is quite simple. Either painting or a full manicure or polishing your nails can affect your natural nails and their health. It is important that your nails have a chance to breathe, regenerate and grow. If you want to have really good looking nails, you’ll need to give them a lot of attention. But it certainly doesn’t mean frequent care in the salon or at home.

What is nail polishing

Nail polishing is rubbing the surface with a fine-grained polish. These polishes eliminate discoloration of the nails and create a natural shine. There is then no need to use a clear polish. Most women polish their nails just so they don’t have to use polish. Some women think that polished nails will hold products better. This is true to a certain extent, but the question is how hard you polish your nails. Whether you go to the salon or polish your nails often, stop doing it.

Why excessive polishing can be harmful

According to leading dermatologist Aanchal Panth, nails are made up of keratin just like hair and have several layers of protection. If you polish them too much, you will naturally peel off the layers of protection over time, which makes your nails weak and prone to breakage. So what happens when you polish too much?

  • The nail plate gets thinner – It’s the protective layer that wears away with polishing.
  • Sensitivity will increase – Nails will become more painful and sensitive because they are thinner.
  • Risk of infections – Excessive polishing leaves micro-holes on the nail that will make it easier for bacteria and fungus to penetrate.
  • Weaker growth – Thin nails break easily, and this hinders their growth.

Signs of frequent polishing

Nails are paper-thin or bend easily. You may also notice them peeling or cracking at the ends. On the surface, your nails are probably much more sensitive than they used to be, plus they may start to lose their natural pink hue and look dull. Have you noticed these signs? Then stop polishing!
