Many things change with age. And it’s generally true that after 50, the body slows down in some ways. Thus, one should try to function in a style to improve his health. But on the contrary, we often do more harm to it. Metabolism and bodily functions slow down. We should release this brake, but we often pull it even harder.

Metabolism slows down with age due to loss of muscle mass. From the age of thirty onwards, a person gradually loses this mass, and at the age of fifty, it can begin to decrease at a rate of 15% per decade. Since muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue, the metabolism responds.

Hormonal changes in the body

For women, menopause is a crucial period, after the onset of which estrogen production declines. This has an effect on the way fat is stored in the body, slowing down the metabolism, a decrease in growth hormone. All this increases fatigue, reduces energy, limits muscle regeneration, but also slows down healing in cases of inflammation or injury.

Few people realize that men also have something called menopause. For them it is called andropause, which can occur even a little earlier, already around the age of forty. After fifty, however, the changes are very similar to those of women, and their psyche also changes significantly. Men are often more sensitive to these changes in terms of their perception.

What is holding us back?

More recent studies confirm that the basal metabolic rate remains relatively stable until age 60. Its decline is rather gradual. It just depends a lot on how one takes care of one’s health. In many cases, we’re hurting ourselves. For example, physical activity declines with age. Often unconsciously, people go for walks less often and do less housework. This contributes to a loss of energy expenditure.

An unregulated diet is also often a problem. People get fewer calories into their bodies in general, but also less protein. The body then starts to save energy for later, which actually turns this starvation into weight gain. In addition, many people in their fifties have problems with lack of sleep and high stress.

What can you do to release the brakes?

You should maintain a healthy lifestyle at any age. However, especially after fifty, when all bodily functions slow down, it is extremely important to make sure that you move regularly and follow a healthy diet. Thanks to this, the brake that comes naturally will not be tightened as much.

In general, although it is true that the human body slows down after fifty, on the other hand, statistics cannot confirm this, because a lot depends on how one approaches the situation oneself. For people who do nothing, it is simply natural that their health will start to deteriorate. On the other hand, if you live a healthy lifestyle, you can be fresher than some people in their forties even at 60.
