Is there other life in the universe? This is a question that many of us ask ourselves, but the answer is not clear-cut. However, scientists generally believe that the universe is so complex and unknowable that there are many strange phenomena in it. A mysterious signal that has been picked up may reveal the mystery.
Imagine living a perfectly normal life with your daily duties and tasks. You don’t think about what’s going on in space around you, and why should you, you’re not a scientist or an astronaut. As a layman, you may not even understand its workings and laws. On the other hand, there are experts who use technology to try to explore the environment of space, which hides many mysteries. And with the help of the signals they pick up, they often come up with completely new facts and open up debates about different theories.
Recently, researchers were able to detect a cosmic phenomenon using the MeerKAT radio telescope. It is an extremely intense radio emission that is reported to originate from a galaxy approximately 7.2 billion light years away from Earth.
When I imagined this situation, my mind flashed to the image of a flash of light suddenly hitting the planet and people immediately speculating whether we were being followed by an alien race. Well, maybe that’s how it would work in science fiction movies, but the scientific reality is a bit different, though no less fascinating.
What actually happened?
The explanation isn’t dramatic. Simply put, a natural phenomenon called a megamaser occurred. Essentially, it’s a giant cosmic laser. It’s created when two galaxies full of gas collide and are compressed. The gas contains hydroxyl molecules, which then start amplifying radio waves. The result is a powerful signal that can travel through space for billions of years.
This signal has also been amplified by a phenomenon called gravitational lensing. For simplicity, between the source of this signal and the Earth was another galaxy that acted as a giant cosmic magnifying glass. It helped amplify the light, and signals could come from much more distant objects.

Honestly? Not yet. But the findings suggested the universe was far more dynamic than we imagined. Thanks to data from this radio telescope, scientists have discovered the existence of gigantic structures. They form when large galaxies collide, leading to more turbulence and waves. The results also suggest that these processes took place around 6.5 billion years ago. Much earlier than scientists had expected.
Opinions vary, but so far it has not been confirmed that such signals are related to communication from an extraterrestrial species. This does not mean that the issue has been completely brushed off the table, although it is probably not related to this signal.
However, whenever you mention signals or mysterious lights coming from outer space to anyone, they immediately flood you with theories about extraterrestrial life. In fact, when I was talking to my uncle, an avid conspirator, about a similar topic, he was pleading with me to instill his truth about aliens and their advanced technology that they use to track us.
I often watch the night sky and think about how complex the universe is. I also once caught a glimpse of a strange light, and naturally my mind immediately started racing with thoughts of nasty creatures trying to colonize the earth. However, I am always looking for logical explanations, so I immediately looked up information on professional websites. Well, I believe that the universe will surprise us, but for now, let’s stick to ideas. Let’s look at the stars and think about what could exist around us.
